One of Scandia's most innovative engineering features is the elevated rock tray system. The heating elements sit protected beneath a rock tray positioned 5 inches above them. What appears to be a minor design choice actually prevents a serious problem that often ruins weaker heaters: sudden temperature stress from water.

When water contacts a 1500°F heating element, the instantaneous temperature differential creates extreme stress. Standard heaters with elements exposed directly to water splashes experience rapid degradation and frequent element failures.

The piezo ignition system provides reliable, spark-based ignition without requiring electrical power or batteries. A simple mechanical action generates the ignition spark, eliminating failure points associated with electronic igniters that can corrode or malfunction in humid environments.

The standing pilot light option offers continuous ignition readiness — the pilot remains lit, providing instant ignition when the thermostat calls for heat. While this consumes minimal gas during standby, it ensures absolute reliability and eliminates any ignition delay.
